The Montreal: Beautiful to Look At, Terrible to Sit In (Until Now)
There are few things in life as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as an Alfa Romeo Montreal. It’s a slice of 1970s Italian excess with vents, curves, and a V8 that sounds like it was tuned by angels with anger issues. But there’s one tiny problem.
The seats.
Originally soft and supportive, the foam inside these masterpieces of Italian craftsmanship now feels more like you’re sitting on a bag of concrete and sorrow. After decades of aging, the once-lovely cushions had turned to dust — quite literally. And as anyone who’s driven one will tell you, it’s very hard to look cool while wincing.
Now, the sensible solution would be to just order replacement seat foams. Except, of course, you can’t — they stopped making them sometime around the fall of the Roman Empire.
So we did what any modern, mildly obsessive car restoration team would do: we fought back with technology.
First, we 3D scanned the original foam components — or what was left of them. These scans were turned into precise CAD models, and then (cue dramatic music) carved anew using a CNC router. That’s right: brand new base, backrest, and headrest foams. Designed to fit like the originals — only better. No crumbling. No discomfort. No turning into dust every time you sit down.
And because we’re not savages, we finished the seats in Scottish tan leather. Soft, luxurious, and far too nice to spill espresso on.
The result? Seats that are as stunning as the car itself — and finally as comfortable as they should be.
